When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.
Galatians 4:4-5
People have been adopting children for years now but have you ever wondered how it all started? Many don’t realize this, but adoption was started by God Himself.
Ephesians 1:5 says that God predestined us for adoption to Sonship through Jesus Christ. This means that God had plans to adopt us as His very own children since the beginning of time. So what exactly is adoption and what does it mean for us to be adopted by God?
Well, according to Bible Study Tools, adoption is the act of leaving one’s natural family and entering into the privileges and responsibilities of another. The word adoption is also used many times by the apostles in the New Testament to describe our salvation.
The truth is that we’re all orphans until we’re born again and God becomes our Heavenly Father. In fact, God’s heart for adoption can be found all throughout scripture. In His Word, the sacrificial, unconditional, fatherly love He has for us cannot be missed.
Our Adoption Into The Kingdom
When God adopted us into His family, it wasn’t as easy as saying “you’re adopted” and that’s it. He had to pay a price for us and then still take care of us for the rest of our lives.
He paid for us with the blood of His one and only Son, a price infinitely greater than anything we would ever have to pay when we choose to adopt. He then promised to always be with us, taking care of all our needs, and He has.
Any Christian who knows who they are and have truly accepted their adoption into God’s house can testify to His faithfulness. When God adopted us He truly gave us all the privileges of being a part of His family. We have His protection, we have His provision, and we even have access to His power. But yes, we also have family responsibilities, which brings me to the next point.
Choosing To Adopt into Your Home
Now adoption today may not have a price as heavy as God had paid, but it’s still very expensive. You will financially and emotionally invest a lot into your child for the rest of your life. This responsibility is a big one and it could take far more from you than you ever expected to give but it’s worth it. It’s worth it because it’s a blessing. A blessing that your Heavenly Father has given you to bring joy into your world. Like giving birth, the process of adoption is not easy, but the joy of adoption far outweighs any difficulties.
So, if you’re considering adopting as your plan A because it’s always been in your heart or as plan B because you can’t have children by birth, know that God, who adopted you, is with you and that He would not have called you to adoption if He didn’t equip you for it. He loves every orphan, He loves you, He has ordained you for a time such as this, and He will be there to support your family until the very end.
