It Costs Too Much!
For many people, the cost of adoption can seem overwhelming, whether the adoption is private, through an agency or adopting internationally. Cost is probably the one, single obstacle that prevents more couples from even looking into adoption. With all the fees, travel expenses and home study costs, it’s enough to discourage anyone from moving forward.
Let’s take a look at some cost estimates from a few of the more popular countries for adoption.
- China: $30,000 – $35,000
- Ethiopia: $40,000 – $45,000
- South Korea: $40,000 – $45,000
- Philippines: $30,000 – $35,000
Why so much? Depending on which adoption path you take, the cost can be either higher or lower, or somewhere within these ranges. While the cost of adoption can be estimated, it is difficult to know exactly how much money will be spent when all is said and done. There are so many variables to consider.
Ordinarily, someone pursuing adoption can expect to pay application fees, home study fees, program fees, and post placement service fees. There may be additional costs as well, all depending on the circumstances of the adoption. Here’s a few more costs to consider (sorry!).
- Agency Fees/Program Application: $15,000
- Dossier Preparation and Clearance: $2,000
- In-Country Adoption Expenses: $6,000
- Major Travel Expenses: $8,000
- In-Country Travel Expenses: $2,000
- Child’s Passport, Visa, Medical Exam: $1,000
