Why Is It So Hard?
Over the next couple of weeks, we will be doing a series of blog articles on the most common barriers to international adoption and what you can do to overcome them. Let’s face it, if adoption were easy, then more and more children would be adopted but the sad fact is, many of them would be adopted by, shall we say, bad people…and for bad reasons. So, handling orphaned children’s lives with extreme caution makes perfect sense. But, with extreme caution comes the potential for extreme barriers and extreme bureaucracy. That is most definitely what we find with the subject of adoption.
The journey to adoption can be an exceptionally long and frustrating road. It can be overwhelming and will test every ounce of patience you ever had. Also….it can be the most beautiful, gratifying and rewarding thing you ever do in your life. Because at the end of the adoption journey is a precious child who will no longer be known by the label ‘orphan’ once and for all. They will be called ‘son’ or daughter.’
So what exactly are some of the most common barriers to international adoption? Let me share a quick list:
- The Cost of Adoption
- The Process of Adoption
- The Waiting of Adoption
- The Cultural Barriers of Adoption
We will take these one by one and go into more detail in the coming days. BUT FIRST – it is critical to recognize right up front that there are difficult barriers to adoption that are very frustrating and will make you want to turn back and quit. But our goal here is not only to inform about those barriers, but to encourage you and share ideas on how to overcome them. If you feel a call on your life to adopt, please don’t let anything stop you!
